Symbolism

The Clay Collective is about transformation and change, much like clay. Clay Collective is inspired by clay itself—fine-grained earth that can be revisioned, redesigned and reorganized into some beautiful, useful and enduring. With clay, change is made only possible with nature's elements.

Winter, the season of water

Water ~ To Flow

The element that gives life. The ability to be flexible, to flow, yet maintain our depth.

In ceramics: The element that allows clay to be molded and shaped, turning clay and built into something meaningful.

Spring, the season of air.

Air ~ To Expand

The element of expansiveness. To expand our reach, to move and be moved.

In ceramics: Air is needed to solidify at piece—to dry out the clay and prepare the clay for fire.

Summer, the season of fire.

Fire ~ To Transform

The element provides the power to change, to create a new way.

In ceramics: In the kiln, the clay transforms from fragile to solid, confirming its shape. It is forever changed.

Fall, the season of earth.

Earth ~ To Nourish

To ground, to root, to take a stance with confidence and stability.

In ceramics: The essence of the practice. Clay comes from the earth and returns to the earth. It is a moldable, transformable material that embodies potential.
